Cobalt Science stores the minimum needed to run your account: staff email addresses, class rosters with student first names and school-issued email addresses (or a sign-in code where a school does not issue student email), each student's readiness-check responses, lesson and quiz answers, and benchmark results (so their own teacher and school can see progress). That's it. We don't run ads, we don't sell data, and we don't track you across the web. Every lesson, simulation, quiz and benchmark is built into the platform and scored right here, no outside services.
Students sign in with the email address their school issued them (or a sign-in code from their teacher, for schools without student email). Beyond that roster entry, we never ask a student for personal information, and student work is visible only to their own teacher, their school's leaders, and their district. Readiness and progress results are reported to the student's own teacher and school. De-identified results may also be combined across many students, in aggregate, to report on how the program works and to improve it. Aggregate reporting never includes names or anything that could identify an individual student.
For school and district customers, Cobalt Science operates as a school official with a legitimate educational interest under FERPA: student records are used only to provide the service, are shared only with the student's own school and district, and are never sold or used for advertising. Schools may request export or deletion of their students' records at any time. Where a school's own agreement addresses student data, that agreement and this policy are read together.
